Audition for Cantus

 

The country’s premier men’s vocal ensemble
is accepting audition materials for Basses,
Baritones and Tenors. Colorful, soloistic voices
are wanted and welcomed! Cantus singer contracts have an annual review and renewal process. The season begins August 1, 2010, and ends July 31, 2011.

Cantus’ compensation package includes a competitive, full-time salary with health and dental benefits and a 403(b) retirement plan and match.

The ensemble currently includes tenors, baritones, and basses on its roster (sorry, no countertenors). Recent engagements include the Boston Pops, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Library of Congress, Minnesota Orchestra, San Francisco Performances, and international radio broadcasts.


Applicants should have at least a Bachelor’s degree, though a greater level of vocal maturity and experience is preferred. Cantus is a self-led ensemble: excellent solo, ensemble, and musicianship skills are essential. The ensemble tours an average of 110 days out of the year, performing around 75 concerts throughout North America and abroad.

Your audition packet should include:
- Résumé/Headshot
- Audition CD comprised of:
- Spoken introduction: Your name, hometown, and the repertoire on the CD
- One aria or art song in English
- One or two arias/art songs in a foreign language
- Two different vocalises which you feel show your voice at its best,
and which display the range of your voice (not including falsetto)

Applications must be postmarked by 02.01.10. Finalists will be contacted by 02.15.10 for a live audition on 03.12.10. Other audition dates may be available.

Please limit any processing of the sound, (i.e. excess reverb or EQ) since this makes it difficult to evaluate a singer's performance, voice, personality, etc. Make certain that the audio quality is high and that the CD has been finalized to play in all CD players.

While we can’t guarantee an opening every season, Cantus hears auditions annually to keep a roster of applicants ready in case replacements become necessary.
